本次展览是本馆第十个西方版画展,我们将为大家展示文艺复兴时期和17世纪来自意大利、法国、德国、荷兰、比利时和西班牙主要艺术家的作品。拉斐尔(1483-1520)和提香(1488-1576)这两位意大利文艺复兴时期杰出的大师长期为宗教和皇室工作,然而为了让公众也可以欣赏、感受艺术,他们决定聘请版画工匠来重新印制自己的作品。拉斐尔聘请了富有才华的马坎托尼奥·莱芒第(1480-1534)。马坎托尼奥·莱芒第的作品有着很高的声誉,乔治奥·瓦萨里对于他的评价是:“很多人向他学习版画制作的真谛”。提香的画作十分生动。他委托尼科洛·博德里尼(1500-1566)把自己的作品制作成木刻版画。本次展出的还有阿戈斯蒂诺·维纳齐亚诺(1490-?)制作的展示巴乔·班迪内利(1493-1560)工作坊的著名蚀刻版画。与班迪内利的雕像一同在佛罗伦萨展出的还有米开朗基罗的作品,汉尼拔和阿戈斯蒂诺·卡拉齐制作的四幅蚀刻版画,吉罗拉莫·穆奇阿诺(1532-1592)设计、科内利斯·科特(1533-1578)制作的描绘圣·尤斯塔奇的作品。除了这些意大利画作,本次展览同样展示了来自北欧主要文艺复兴艺术家阿尔布雷特·丢勒(1471-1528)、卢卡斯·凡·莱顿(1494-1533)、勃鲁盖尔(1525-1569)、霍尔奇尼斯(1558-1617)的重要蚀刻和木刻作品。

For our tenth exhibition of Western prints, we are proudly displaying some of the major Renaissance and 17th century artists from Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, and Spain. Two of the greatest Italian Renaissance masters—Raphael (1483-1520) and Titian (1488-1576)—worked for popes and kings; but they decided to employ print-makers to reproduce their work for a wider public. Raphael employed the talented Marcantonio Raimondi (1480-1534), whose work was so highly valued that, according to Giorgio Vasari, “many came to him to learn the art of print-making.” Titian made splendid drawings that he entrusted to Nicolo Boldrini (1500-1566) to transfer to woodcuts. We also have on display the famous etching by Agostino Veneziano (1490-?) showing the workshop of Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560), whose sculptures can be seen in Florence alongside those of his contemporary, Michelangelo, four etchings by Annibale and Agostino Carracci, and a striking depiction of Saint Eustache by Cornelis Cort (1533-1578) after a design by Giralomo Muziano(1532-1592). In addition to these Italian prints, we also have important etchings and woodcuts by the major Renaissance artists of northern Europe: Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533), Pieter Bruegel (1525-1569), and Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617).
From the 17th Century, we have memorable examples by the two greatest artists from Holland and Belgium: Rembrandt (1606-1669) and Peter Paul Rubens ((1577-1640). However, while Rubens employed an assistant (Schelte Adams Bolswert [1586-1659]) to make etchings after twenty of his magnificent landscapes, Rembrandt preferred to make etchings himself for a new public that prized artistic inventiveness. Among the 17th century artists in our exhibition, we will see some examples of prints reproducing work by famous artists such as Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), but we will mainly see original designs by the finest print-makers of northern and southern Europe: Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) , Jacob Ruisdael (1628-1682), Abraham Bosse (1602-1676), Jacques Callot (1592-1635), Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), Jusepe Ribera (1591-1652), Stefano della Bella (1610-1664), Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609-1665). Be sure to note the fantastic—and very rare—etchings of the four seasons by the extraordinarily gifted Pietro Testa (1612-1650).

Titian (1488-1576), “Saint Jerome in the Desert,” woodcut, circa 1525-1530. Nicolo Boldrini made the woodcut after Titian’s design. According to legend, the saint lived for a time in the wilderness, where he was befriended by a lion. In this superb landscape, Titian includes three lions.

Agostino made many prints reproducing major paintings for the use of art students who might not be able to see the originals. His source here is a beloved painting by Correggio in the Parma museum.

美国纽约城市大学研究生院名誉退休教授,先后在加州伯克利大学获学士学位、哈佛大学获博士学位,曾在哈佛大学、纽约大学等高校任教。现为北京大学外国语学院专业教授。
作为热爱艺术的收藏家,斯通教授收藏了诸多著名艺术家的版画珍品,为了让更多中国学生欣赏到西方艺术文化,他捐赠了一批精彩的艺术品给北京大学赛克勒考古与艺术博物馆,希望能建立一座中西文化交流的艺术殿堂。
